Must Listen

What can I say about this album? Was it among the best of what I heard last year? Yes, easily. Is it one of my favourite Kung Fu Kenny projects? Yes most definitely. Do I think that riencarnated is one of the best tracks that I have ever heard from genius himself? You bet your ass I do. I haven’t been able to stop listening to this album since its surprise release early December and I am quite happy that I didn’t write about this immediately as it has truly grown with me on each subsequent listen.

This album seemed to divide many, some didn’t like it for various reasons not limited to the songs with SZA on them (haters honestly SMH) or more justifiably realising that they don’t like the West Coast sound. This was never a problem with me and even with time some of the songs that I thought were weaker on the album have grown to be some of my favourites. Listening to it now, I cannot believe that I wasn’t really feeling gnx on the initial sessions. I cannot get enough of it now, it is a standout of repping where your from and the community that Kendrick has been able to bring together - a massive achievement.

I was thirteen up at Avalon, poppin’ chains Fourteen, ridin’ minibikes with some
Dead friends Twenty-one, flag on my head like a Taliban Twenty-five, feelin’ like the box,
It was full of sand At the cemetery, fuck that, that’s where I could’ve been

This whole album is an ode to the West Coast; with the features from many local artists that I admittedly haven’t heard of but they are prefect fits for their songs and their verses. Everything they say is grimey and it fits with the theme of the album with the life of the area, the dangers through gang life and otherwise:

Okay, this shit like forty, that’s a dub, okay, let’s add it up Baby ass fat, can
You do it? Can you back it up? Kickflip a nigga, I got Tech Decks And it ain’t shit for me
To call and get your chin checked Tell ‘em, “Dody did that”

heynow on the album GNX I loved this whole verse from Dody 6 - especially after the beat switch

I wouldn’t say it necessarily champions the darker sides of the life but it with how good everyone delivers with the vocals, bars and beats. You may find yourself looking to Crip walk and buy some blue.

My present life is Kendrick Lamar A rapper looking at the lyrics to keep you in
Awe The only factor I respected was raisin’ the bar My instincts sent material straight to
The charts, huh

reincarnated on the album GNX The start of the third verse always manages to give me goosebumps what a theme!

what's playing?
